OUr first blog interview with the AMAZING TRACI OF SAMPLER VILLAGE

So a week or so ago I sent Traci a few questions so we could get to know her better. This woman works her butt off!!!! plus supports all her villagers!!!! here's what she had to say!

Why did you start Sampler villager?I have always loved sampler boxes, who doesn't like to try before they buy. I knew a lot of crafters/artisans so I asked around if they would be interested in participating in a sampler box. The response was overwhelming, thus Sampler Village was born in September 2009.

What is the best part of running Sampler Village?By far, meeting and getting to know all the Villagers, we a like a family here. It takes a Village to do a sampler box...LOL!!

How many vendors on average do you work with?Every month is different. Our biggest box by far is our Christmas/Holiday Box. We had over 100 participating for those boxes alone. I would say an adverage of participates (Villagers) each month is between 50-70.

What is the most miraculous/cool blessed thing that has ever happened as a result of your company? The Villagers! I have been able to meet so many wonderful people that I consider my 'friends'. I do feel very blessed that I can be a stay at home mom and TOTALLY LOVE what I do.

Are there any new ventures on the horizon that you want to share with us?Sampler Village just keeps growing and growing. We offer our Villagers lots of fun incentives to come join us. New Ventures? YES!! Although not related to Sampler Village, a huge online Craft Market is being developed as we speak. I am very proud and honored to be part of it's development. CraftCafe.co will be making is debut in late spring, early summer of 2012!

How does anyone interested reach you?You can reach me directly by email: traci@samplervillage.com

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Have you forgot something?

Don't ever underestimate the value of a buyers feedback. Weather good or bad it provides key information to why your business is flourishing, or failing!
Buyers, as small businesses profit mainly from word of mouth, your feedback is paramount to our success! Even not so stellar feedback should be seen as a piece of info as to where something may need to be improved, perhaps even something you never thought of.
Customer critique is one of the best weapons sellers have. Surely a happy customer will tell their friends all about you but so will a dissatisfied one.

Forgotten to leave your feedback? remember how vital it is for us.....and leave us some when you have a minute!

Pricing for small companies

I recently found this article and thought I would share it since we are all worried about pricing.

The pricing strategy of your small business can ultimately determine your fate. Small business owners can ensure profitability and longevity by paying close attention to their pricing strategy.
Commonly, in business plans I've reviewed, the pricing strategy has been to be the lowest price provider in the market. This approach comes from taking a quick view of competitors and assuming you can win business by having the lowest price.
Lowest Pricing Does Not Win

Having the lowest price is not a strong position for small business. Larger competitors with deep pockets and the ability to have lower operating costs will destroy any small business trying to compete on price alone. Avoiding the low price strategy starts with looking at the demand in the market by examining three factors:

1. Competitive Analysis: Don't just look at your competitor's pricing. Look at the whole package they offer. Are they serving price-conscious consumers or the affluent group? What are the value-added services if any?

2. Ceiling Price: The ceiling price is the highest price the market will bear. Survey experts and customers to determine pricing limits. The highest price in the market may not be the ceiling price.

3. Price Elasticity: If the demand for your product or service is less elastic, you can then have a higher ceiling on prices. Low elastic demand depends on limited competitors, buyer's perception of quality, and consumers not habituated to looking for the lowest price in your industry.
Once you understand the demand structure in your industry, review your costs and profit goals as set in your business plan or financials. The low price strategy is best avoided by small business but there are conditions such as a price war that can drag a company into the lowest price battle.

Avoiding a Price War
A price war can wreck havoc in any industry and leave many businesses, out of business. In the early 90's, I observed the competitive exercise equipment market enter a price war in a large city market. Profits were plentiful but a price war took the gross margins from 42% to 12%. In less than 18 months, over 60% of the retailers were out of business while my division went national. Take these tips to evade a deadly price war:
Enhance Exclusivity: Products or services that are exclusive to your business provide protection from falling prices.

  • Drop High Maintenance Goods: There may be products or services in your business that have high customer service and maintenance costs. Drop the unprofitable lines and find out what customers don't want.

  • Value-added: Find value your business can add to stand out in the marketplace. Be the most unique business in the category.

  • Branding: Develop your brand name in the market. Brand name businesses can always stand strong in a price war. Leave the price-cutting and price wars to big business. Small businesses with solid pricing strategies can escape a price war and low price position. Carefully, consider your price decisions. Your business depends on it.

  • I found this article BRILLANT  often we lower our prices too much. Although we all KNOW that price doesn't always reflect quality....our society has brainwashed us to believe the more something costs the better it is... Just something to think about the next time you think being cheaper than so and so's store.....you may be hurting yourself.

Out with the old and in with the new!

This weeks featured artist on etsy was the last straw for me! the featured proudly professed how she is inspired by the resourcefulness of people who don't have money while she sells her 45$ panties and High Priced lingerie. I am not certain if these are rich people with no money, but as an actual person with no money I buy my cotton panties in a bag for 12$ for 5 pairs.....if I splurge on fancies it's 5 for 20$.

A few weeks ago I came across http://www.luulla.com/  My supply store gets alot of hassle from etsy so I decided to start moving it over to luulla and see what happens, all I got was helpful staff, who diligently moved each one of my listings over and uploaded them all manually (MANUALLY!!!!) all 176 of them pictures and all.

Tommy told me it would take a few days. Once they were done he told me and I had a look and wow....perfection. It is nice to be able to put my shop in someones hands and trust all will go well.... I was happy with the 6 months of free service, I never dreamed the was a company that would do all this.

I am now gunning for a spot for me and the boy. The feeling of luula is light, their staff cares and even helps promote ALL shops....not the most artsy fartsy one with the best pics and  overpriced pieces of folded paper.

Do I hate etsy....of course not...but I am tiring of their system. My supply shop is harassed alot for really what boils up to nonsense.....while overseas resellers RUIN the market with mass produced "handmade" goods simply because they sell so much more, and raise etsy's profit higher they seem to slip under the radar. I recently  had a friend have to send in pictures of her making all her items because it was thought perhaps they were not handmade when this shop owner was clearly a handmade shop....the hassle they gave here was truly undeserved, and sooner or later it will happen to all of us. The traffic and sales from etsy can't be argued, but if I have to read on more feature artist and their bullsht story i might vomit some handmade puke!

I am PRAYING that luulla takes off. Perhaps if etsy could realize that without it's sellers they would have no paycheck or site, eat a little humble pie and try to help out the underdogs (like those of us who have  made less than 20$ this entire month) perhaps we wouldn't have our panties in a bunch ready to jump ship to those that simply treat us properly....like artist, people and part of something greater!

Thanks luulla!!! I wish you, and us sellers all the success in the world. Keep treating us well and we'll tell the world about you....value us as artist and people and we'll return the favor in sales and word of mouth!

    A week of good....than bad

I always try to stay positive so I will start there

Got an amazing deal on a handmade quilt at sinclaieville . I love it. It's so perfect!  I have always had a soft spot for quilts...the amount of time and work that goes into it amazes me.  This quilt was perfect. A mix of purples and greens with a few pops of pattern. Also I liked that it was backed in black, I find it adds a modern touch.
I was shocked when this quilt had been marked down to 35$. It wa over I had to have it. It came smartly wrapped in a clean garbage bag in a great well wrapped box. It did'nt take too long, and after a handwash and line dry it has'nt left the couch yet! In our house we are big cuddlers....our new couch we bought when we moved is a huge oversized blue faux suede with room for 4 to stretch right out. We often lay all over the couch in pj's falling in and out of naps cozy under handmade blankets and quilts, watching reruns of looney tunes with the boy. It's a wonderful way to spend the weekend. I would suggest everyone check out sinclaieville - gifts from a quilters heart   They do still have quilts at amazing prices and also sale ones too. But most of all Tami is an amazing seller, the love she has for what she does shines thru. I would buy here again anytime my budget allows.

    The bad
The boy has bronchitis  ICK   so shipments are slightly delayed as he is home with me from school. Oddly it has'nt dulled his loudness or obsession for video games.....but I am glad to be able to baby him for a bit. Now that he is 5 he does'nt seem to need me so much (not at all if you'd asked him)  His teeth are loose, he picks his own outfits......and breaks mommy's heart with his sudden burst of lippy comments!  As much as I miss my baby boy I am also amazed by my little man daily. This picture is from his christmas concert!

    Stores I love

So I am starting my destash store on www.luulla.com and needed a new banner. I tried to make one but it never works out so well! I searched and searched but also didn't want to invest alot because I don't know how luulla will go. I came across this cute shop http://www.etsy.com/shop/DollarBanners DOLLAR BANNERS.

WHAT??? banners for 1$. Indeed it's true!  I fell in love with the bluebird design. I don't like elegant la di da stuff because that's not who I am. I love birds, and lots of color and something that you don't see everyday.

I contacted The shop owner about it and explained I needed a specific size. She explained she normally charged an extra fee for resizing but I didn't have to worry she just took care of it. I could have added an avatar for 1$ but I had previously decided to use my picture of me so people can see me.

WELL, within no time she sent me this!

Valerie is funny, kind and easy to work with and I would EASILY recommend this seller to anyone....and already have!

please take a minute to check her out. for 1$ you can freshen your store whenever. I didn't ask about custom but Valerie is so easy to work with I am guessing it would be fine!

This is for sure a store I love

what else?      OH THE BOY MADE IT TO FIVE! Yep! 5 years old...broke my heart but I am proud because we both made it! He had his first play date with a friend from school on his birthday it was alot of fun! They both are adhd so it was a very interesting day!

Lots of new stuff in the shop including a 10% of candle and tart sale, 75% off clearance sale and new roll on perfumes and jewelry!

YAY product review WITH PICTURES (yep solved the issue)

So I got the photo thing sorted out! I will be fixing the last 2 posts when I get some time! Things are CrAzY!!! But crazy good, busy, in fact we've had to turn down offers for custom/bulk work and craft shows. We took some big leaps and are on a good curve

We had some new things come as we are having a 99% handmade holiday (we bought our grandkids a wii) but the rest has been handmade...it feels AWESOME  to know our money is going to families not factories!

    so let's begin
    |PigCastle is someone I ran into right after starting on etsy. Always great stuff, reasonable prices and just a nice chick! I NEED twine.... (It's all thepetitepapier's fault). She got me started!  I got a roll of peapod twine from pigcastle and adore it. It arrived fast too!

I had to remove the previous review of livelovegreen as she's a super scammer bitch  SORRY

she also runs olympia oils and northwest naturals. she likes to sell stuff and take money but never send product!
I do have other etsy purchases to list but it's late and i'm sleepy. I will try to post again on or before the weekend. Visit these shops! tell them we sent you cuz we love them!

    Happy shopping!

BIG BAD MAIL BAG Bad in a good way

ok it's been building up for a bit!

    Dianapantz
awesome supercool chick! Great taste and seriously well made stuff

    http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.260794087.jpg

I use the small pouch bag for the boy for show and tell and the bag as his library bag. He loves it

    Dianapantz is here http://www.etsy.com/shop/dianapantz

    PiixlWixCandleCo

I make candles and tarts and bath stuff. However I find it seriously indulgent to buy other peoples stuff. I scored these melts that I think are the best I have ever bought! smooth creamy and just awesome. This is my second shopping trip at this shop and likely not my last!
    http://img2.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.270989982.jpg

We got another cute top done from bubblesandbugs because we have no long sleeve tops. I will get a picture of it asap! This shop is just amazing, accomadating and goes the extra mile! http://www.etsy.com/shop/BubblesandBugs

    naturale
this shop has a smaller amount of stuff than most bath and body shops...it's because what she does is done RIGHT! The acorn soap is something you must try....I felt so clean, I know it sounds silly but it was amazing! the aromabeads in lavender were also lovely mixed with a VERY generous amount of dried buds.
    http://img0.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.265676280.jpg
    http://img1.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.81190433.jpg

    PKStuff
I have shopped here alot....not as often as I wish I could. She's funny, talented and a fabric whore like me! only she can actually make stuff. I had this old glass jar I kept all my shipping stuff in...tags....twine labels and stuff. BUSTED all over the desk....so I thought this would be a god substitute
    http://img3.etsystatic.com/il_570xN.269019887.jpg
now I would like a dozen or so......theyre great! and so is the woman that makes them. http://www.etsy.com/shop/PKStuff?ref=pr_shop_more

check out these great shops and others! keep the handmade movement alive. Just so you know every single gift for christmas this year and 9 birthdays are all handmade....the only gift not handmade is a nintendo wii for our grandkids....other than that everything was made by someone. we supported a family not a company.....if you really want to send banks and big companies a message....shop locally, handmade, as often as possible.

YAY MAILBAG DAY jam-jelly-and honey OH MY!!!

Finally some mail is getting thru!!!!

I always love jam and jellies for my son as he adores jam sandwiches,,,, I have seen bovinebubbles alot and being that they are canadian, and have a huge selection of jams and whatnot I decided to try! Also since my order from a heartsy/etsy seller never showed up (if it was ever really shipped)

It was a BIG splurge but made sense in the long run. For 53$ I could get 6 jars with expedited delivery! it works out to about 8$ and change per jar for 8 ounce jars I don't think that's terrible....plus it beats the supermarket selection.

I ordered 2 banana nut butters, 1 blueberry nectarine, one vanilla pear cinnamon, one strawberry mango and the one my son and grandchildren begged for 1 bubblegum apple jelly!

It arrived today!!!  beautifully jarred, VERY securely packaged....very impressed

we only have opened the banana nut bread butter...GOOD LORD!!! it's unreal. I had mine on rye bread, while my son mixed his in with plain oatmeal...we were BOTH impressed. I CANNOT wait to try the rest.

The seller was very helpful, informative and patient. I had some odd yet somple questions and she assured me all would be fine.

Bovine bubbles also offers a great body line also....I would WITHOUT a doubt shop here again and reccomend this shop to anyone.

you can find the shop HERE

OH and before I forget....the honey selection is also great!!! lavender honey yum....that will be the next buy!

Robins little nest! Not your average bird

up late one night looking for carpets...I'm kinda odd in the things I collect. I adore coats, hats, carpets, aprons..... yep  odd!

I was looking for area rugs that were eco friendly... I saw the picture in the listing for this carpet

pretty huh?  It's hard to tell from a picture what a rug will really look like and feel like, but you can tell this is thick. I am into primitive, shabby chic, cottage type stuff! This carpet was perfect color wise. and wasn't perfect fancy shmancy looking (like our comfy cozy home) I contacted robin, who, I have to say is about the sweetest most accommodating seller EVER!  we set up the listing and I waited....waited.....waited... but not long.

In about a week or so it came and like a kid at Christmas I wasted no time in ripping the box apart to find the softest most luscious carpet.....I had contacted Robin about it not laying flat, she offered a few tips and it worked.

This carpet love to be thrown in the washer and dryer, giver a good yank in all directions and used. it's been in the bathroom where it DRINKS water off the kids after the bath, now it lives in our master bedroom at the foot of the bed...it has a special home under our dog. Because it's so think (LITERALLY over an inch think) and cozy and lush, Co-jack has deemed it worthy of comforting his old arthritic bones.

I came home the other day and Co-jack cam down the hall and stretched in the odd way big dogs do...I walked into the bedroom and felt the carpet and it was so warm I know he was there for hours.

Although never intended to be a dog mat.....it's a beautiful carpet after all....we kind of think in our house if it's good enough for the dog it MUST be ok for us too

Please visit robins store right here  she sells all kinds of cute stuff and amazing pictures. She was amazing to deal with and  honestly concerned when I had a few issues with the carpet. She is honestly simply happy to know someone will enjoy her stuff and give it a good home. It's obvious she's passionate about what she does....and you can tell!

WHA WHA WHAAAAA the first BAD mail bag

I am very careful to watch what I say or write when it comes to reviewing or feedback. I, also an online merchant with 2 stores know this can make or break you.....I have had not so great experiences but this I had to post.

I got a heartsy voucher from bodyluxe  I waited over a month to use it as I find sometimes that's better with the bath and body stuff..After all the rave reviews and the bragging about being in the emmy swag bag I though how could I lose. This is EASILY the most obvious case of sellers riding previous accolades EVER!

I ordered 2 healing organic balms, 1 perfume sample and a room spray....

The room spray is glorious I will admit, and I was sent a small sample of bath salts also but alas these items were purchased as a gift for a friends based on the packaging I thought it was a beautiful gift to give.

Needless to say the only thing good were said salts and spray .

the 2 balms came in ugly little white tubs (standard nothing special)  not the clear jar with beautiful labels shown in pictures that include the ingredients....one had a simple label with the name, the other no label at all. I had to go thru all my purchases to find out....than the perfume sample isn't labeled either....the kicker is I was charged 8$ shipping and the actual cost was 3.28$. I don't know about other sellers but if I charge you 8$ for shipping and it's 3.28 I refund you 4$....I understand this is heartsy deal and it's kinda hard to do but a credit would have been nice!   it;s not even about the 4$ it's the point that I work as hard for my money as anyone else....

    I ordered

    I got

I will say when I spoke to the seller before the purchase she seemed to be great to deal with...had I known about the balms I would have ordered something else as these were gifts. To not even have the ingredients listed or a card included with it is not a good idea. I often don't have ingredients listed on my label but I always jot them down on a note card or paper and include it as people do have allergies. name labels are nice to simply so I can know what it is I ordered without having to go all thru my list of purchases.

I will say it all smells good, but please if your going to charge PREMIUM prices please do a PREMIUM job!

i'm sorry if this all seems harsh, I guess i'm growing tired of some sellers coasting thru while doing the minimal amount of effort needed while me and many sellers I know busting our butts to make sales with far better presentation, and effort put forth!

It feels bad to write something not nice about a company who likely did'nt see the problem in the first place....but it also feels pretty crappy to be on the receiving end of something I ordered that turned out to be not what I thought!

    MAIL CALL Bubbles and bugs!

bubbles and bugs is this sweet shop owner that seems to be able to find any fabric and make the cutest necktie tops. Some have suspenders...mine never do. I first came across her when looking for construction stuff for the boy... I got an amazing brown top with a dump truck tie.....

Well The boy is sooooooo into green eggs and ham....I figured i'd never find a thing. I spent hours searching etsy, ebay and so on...so I dropped bubbles and bugs a line and asked if she could help....within literally minutes she sent me back a sample...IT WAS PERFECT. With bubbles and bugs you can get a tshirt or long sleeve in an insane amount of colors...So I picked BRIGHT ORANGE (i think it looks great with blue jeans)

Well today it arrived.... I don't have a picture but I will tonight....It's unreal  this is the necktie piece she cut for the top on a white top

There is no doubt in the world I will use this seller again. Infact I am thinking of doing shirts for all the kids in our family, as she has alomost everything kids love! I would reccomend this seller to ANYBODY and she can be found HERE   thanks Jaymee for everything!!!

    Proven Vacation

it's been so lovely but odd to be taking so much time off. I keep remembering how this very day will never repeat itself. My son "the boy"   is almost 5....and God willing he'll make it!  It's so weird, bizzare and incrediably rewarding at this age. The stuff he says blows me away. He reads me stories, combs my hair and does'nt care how mushy he is with me in public. I miss the smaller boy that fell asleep on my chest....but I love the one that says "were necking" when daddy asks him about our kissy wrestling fights.... so here's my boy at 4 yrs old....

MAIL BAG - and EARLY haha I suprise myself sometimes!

Yep.....the CNE is in town....that means the end of the summer. It's 11 days until back to school..I lucked out and had a boy who hit that grows really slow stage this year so he needed nothing for school.....however that does'nt mean I did''nt but him stuff anyways!

I got some labels like these....  Honestly I do like the product but it took awhile to get proofs, and than tok longer to arrive. But the labels are fun, vibrant and very sticky. These were purchased  at The Lollipop Label Shop
I would give this shot a second try though for sure as the fints, combo packs, and pictures are so cute.

This is not my sons name either but it's the site's photo.

I bought my furry son a nice gift!!! He's our 74 lb goldendoodle co-jack (long story)

We ran across The Fyber Stud thru Heartsy. A man crochet artist that is funny, patient, actually cares about what he sells, has amazing attention to detail and a shop worth spending a bit more for a great item. I read theu and just fell in love with this thinner crochet mat.

I'm really hopefull that the dog will hate it and it becomes mine...Thanks Rohn we will be back to shop with you  Click here for  TheFyberStud

I know it's been awhile. But i'll make it worth it

So summer is winding down.....am I the only mom counting th  days until the school bell rings? It seems my mom is right. She told me that this time of year the parents get as sick of the kids somedays as do the kids of the parents.

so lots to go on today!!!

    NEWS
Sarah, the great girl that helps me when my shops get busy has opened her own store. I have never met someone so obsessed with paper in my life. Tissue paper, cardstock, wrapping paper  ANYTHING
http://www.pushinpaper.etsy.com/ is her shop. It's adorable and her work is amazing!

    Mailbag

So I am starting to put things away for birthdays and christmas (7 birthdays from sept-jan plus christmas)

Jodiscraftemporium is truly one of my best shopping times ever. Anytime I ever shop here it's simple, and everything from transaction to product is perfect! I purchased this set for my mom
4 simple crocheted clothes for her kitchen. She has a romantic dreamy kitchen, and I know these will go beautifully. My mom is stating the value of shopping handmade. I have vowed to have a totally 100% handmade only holidays!   check out jodi's shop. you'll find so much stuff. And she's been known to do some custom work too.  I had a carpet made and thru various washes and being in the kitchen it still looks brand new. It honestly delights me everytime I see it. Click here for jodi's shop

Tulips treasures is a canadian seller. I found tulip thru bnr's and also heartsy. I found her shop FULL of great stuff. A mix of accessories, skin care and more I was delighted to find this Shea Lavender butter.
It is so simple in it's make up but glorious in it's smooth creamy perfection. It literally melts into your skin but the scent lingers forever it's amazing. I've been using it as after care for my new tattoos also and it's PERFECT! I aalso picked up some great hair clips and a cute pewter nest ring at this store too. How great to have such a mix of stuff in one place. Click here for tulips treasure

Piixwixcandleco is a shop I ran into thru BNR's on Etsy. I am a sucker for solid perfume...so when I found out I could buy 3 and get one free I was ready!!!! I picked wild cherry vanilla, lavender lemon, and nag champra  patchoulli. As my free one she did a custom nag champra. they arrived fast....really fast. In adorable metal slide tins they are the perfect size. They are highly fragrant but when applied they are not over powering at all.
This one was my fave....it's not a smell I would normally pick....it reminds me of cherry lifesavers  mmmmmm.  Find this great store here by clicking here

I will be adding more to this list this evening....but.... I have the whole house to myself....no son, hubby or dog....so i'm off to draw a long bath and make some food nobody else in the house likes|!
